XXII Nordea Riga marathon – annual race with participation of the residents of Latvia and other countries took place on 20 May.
The first marathon was organized by the Riga City Council in 1991, Nordea has become its general sponsor since 2007.
In 2008 the Nordea Riga marathon was recognized as the best marketing campaign in Latvia, in 2009 the marathon was mentioned as the most fast developing sports event in Europe, after which it got global recognition.
Over 18 thousand people participated in the Riga marathon this year, among them there were both professional athletes and amateur sportsmen. The race consists of several parts: two main distances: the 42 km marathon and 21km one, besides, it includes 10 km and 5 km races, which are open for everybody with no age limits. That is why whole families with prams traditionally take part in 5km mass-start.
The runner from Kenya Kurgat Titus Kipkovir and Iraida Alexandrova from Russia became the winners of the main distance of 42km.
